This was an old scrapped design for a Gem dress bc I felt like it would fit better for someone like Stress since her whole thing is faeries. Maybe I'll make a moth version for Pearl someday.

I kinda wanna design some stuff for other hermits but I got no clue who so I guess for now we're sticking with Gem.

Hi, I didn't know I was gonna make another post in this blog ever since the weird shit that happened all that long ago made me less publicly into PM's works but sometimes I browse the lobcorp tag and i got fucking slapped by the fact that people are still using the mod i made several years ago.

It slapped me so hard that I wanted to at least post details I remember about the suit that are otherwise lost because of several factors. I'm actually surprised that I remember a lot of these details even now. So here it is!

It was the ego of a silly little fan abno I made based on my OC, and their main concept is basically "being tempted by a promise/promises you know (or don't) that someone cannot keep" basically, someone who is either unaware (or unwilling to realize) that they have made a bad deal...a deal with the devil, maybe. And that they're willing to wait, to suffer, if it meant that that maybe someday that promise will come true and the impossible could become possible. Hence "Innocent Martyr"

I doubt it would happen but I'm totally okay with people drawing their lob chars in this ego as long as I get credited for the outfit, It would warm my heart to see it ^^ you can also make slight edits and embellishments (like making it more inline to fit your character.

Maybe someday if I'm motivated and inspired enough, I'll make a library of ruina/limbus company version that's more in tune with the abnorm but today is not that day ^^

Alternative Sisters

Random idea = random concept

• Celestia — "sick" version: Albinism. She has almost white colors, very sensitive skin to sunlight and weak health. Yes, she is princess of Sun but she cannot being under sunbeans a long time. Also her hair half dragging on the ground. Because her magic is weak due to albinism, which makes her very vulnerable to sun and her own solar magic. — "healthy" version: Symbolic albinism or Leucism. She has normal health and magic power, not vulnerable to sun. She is just kinda dazzlingly light like sunlight and her colors are pale like they have faded under Sun. Her exterior is symbolic and reference to belonging to the day luminary. Hair spreads on the ground just like aesthetics.

• Luna — "sick" version: Conditional melanism. Not melanism in original meaining, more likely as coloring of nocturnal animal. She is very dark and therefore is perfect to hiding at midnight and shadows. She is "wild" both figuratively and literally. Doesn't communicate with ordinary creatures, understands language of nocturnal animals, hunts (unknown how and for what exactly) and partly has habits of an animal. Does not tolerate daylight, sleeps in a dark place during day (possibly in cave) — "healthy" version: Melanism. She is normally in habits, communication and other things. She is just more dark than her original version. She is dark, but not completely black, like night. And she is tolerant to daylight, just late riser and love night hours. Her exterior is symbolic and reference to belonging to the night. Yes, her lunar c.m. isn't bright like moon but her silver eyes - yes.

Not official redesign, headcanon, AU or somthing else. Just random concept and nothing more. Maybe someday I'll draw them like this or maybe not.

It turned out to be too contrasting but in general this is such idea - Celestia is clearly visible in daylight and at night [in the dark] she can dazzle because of light colors. On contrary Luna is better visible at night, when it is already dark around and your screen is more contrasting but in daylight she can be invisible on dark background.

The Ink Demonth 2023 - Day 21. City

Day 21. City Crossover: Samurai Jack Aku is like that one uncle who made his fortune by pure luck (e.g. winning the lottery) and now feels entitled to give life advice to everyone around him on what to do to be as successful as he is, lol.

This is probably one of my best and favourite entries in this year's Ink Demonth.

The funny thing is that I originally had a different idea here - it was supposed to be a crossover with the Spiderverse, where in Spider-Men City one of the Spider-Man (probably Milo) asks Bendy if he's Venom, and Bendy replies that he is, but better because he doesn't need a host. However, I decided that I didn't want to draw the city from this movie, or even so many Spider-Men (although I love both the movie and Spider-Man himself in almost every version) - so Titatotrix and I did a brainstorming session, which resulted in my very discovery: "of course, Aku City... it was supposed to be Aku City from the beginning!" And we got it! I've always wanted to draw Aku. I've drawn Samurai Jack and more, there was even a short comics from my favourite episode... but never Aku. And he is such a lovely object to draw...

I love Samurai Jack. This is probably still my favourite cartoon. And I deeply regret the ending of the last series (the one from Swim Adult). Seriously, I was really sad that so many well-thought-out episodes and the entire complex plot were ruined with one stupid decision at the end... what a shame. I still love the show, and Jack was one of my big crushes (along with Hercules from the 1995 series and Chase Young from Shaolin Showdown and only from Shaolin Showdown - we don't talk about Chronicles). Plus Aku was dubbed in the original by Mako, one of my favourite voice actors (he did Splinter in my favourite TMNT movie and Uncle Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender) - may he rest in peace.

While making this picture, I had great fun at every stage: sketching, making lineart, colouring... I would love to continue the theme of "uncle" Aku giving good advice to Bendy, but, unfortunately, I don't have time for that anymore. Maybe I'll come back to it someday. By the way, while coming up with this entry - and it was after linearizing the next one, Radio, which you will see in a few hours - Titatotrix and I came to the conclusion that this year's Ink Demonth in my version looks a bit like Bendy's journey through the Multiverse and asking various characters for advice on how to deal with his perpetual depression (and with Joey). Well, it really looks like that. Plus entries where Sammy does something... sammish X"D

I! Have! Artists block!

So what better way to beat it than to find a template and fill it out? That way I don't have to think too hard about what it is I'm drawing, and rather, just drawing. I didn't let myself get hung up on making the lines perfect, and I treated the little drawings on the side as more of an opportunity to doodle, so this was kind of relaxing to do, tbh.

Also thought it would be kinda fun to give them portraits based on iconic stills/pictures from each Dragon Age game. For Tabris I used the painting from DAO for the City Elf origin, for Hawke I used a screenshot from the DA2 cinematic trailer, and I used Lavellan's tarot card. Maybe I'll do full size versions of these drawings someday, but for now I'm just trying to get my mojo back.

Also I just noticed I mixed up turquoise with teal (which I do literally all the time) but I'm too lazy to fix it so. Pretend it says teal.

hi anne <3 i'm not sure if anyone has asked you this yet, but do you have any concrete plans for any particular cross stitches in 2024? is there a 'holy grail' cross stitch that you aspire to complete (either this year or in general)? what do you find the hardest ting to cross stitch?

Thank you for asking, Lola! I love a chance to talk about my cross stitch! And oh, I have LOTS of plans!

I have 3 patterns completed and ready to be stitched after the one I'm currently working on. I have my Season 4 Tarlos, which will be the final (for now) installment in my Tarlos series. I have one ready to go that's going to be simply the text of every quote in which TK calls Carlos "babe" or "baby"--that one will take a while. And I have a smaller soulmates scene one that I recently talked a bit about here.

I also have a few patterns that I have started working on, like my Carlos Tomás Reyes project that will be the companion to Tyler Kennedy Strand. But that one still needs a lot of work before it's ready to be stitched.

And then I have about a million little half-formed ideas that I'll start to develop more once I get through the above.

As far as a 'holy grail' cross stitch, probably the only thing that might come close to meeting that definition is my Loft Series. I love the loft so much and I also love celebrating it in stitch form!

The first time I stitched the loft was this one, but I actually don't count it as part of my official Loft Series because it was one of my first attempts at creating a pattern--I still love it but it's not as elaborate as later attempts.

The first true installment in the Loft Series was the dining area, right now I'm working on the loft entrance, and I think I'll do at least one more and possibly two. I want to do a more elaborate version of their bedroom. And I'd like to attempt the kitchen. I might have exhausted all angles of the loft by that point. Though now that I think of it, maybe I could also do one facing the wall from the couch featuring Lou II's tank? So maybe 3 more.

The hardest thing, at least when it comes to creating patterns, is making detailed and recognizable objects. I don't think I'm all that good at drawing, and pattern making is sort of related to drawing, though it's more akin to creating pixel art. I have to sit there filling in boxes with different colors to create a recognizable object. However, I think I'm getting better. For example, on a recent project, I think I managed a passable dog and flamingo:

so i have this headcanon of Red Rapper dating MC Adore/So'ra for a time, but they broke up, and So'ra started dating DJ Yellow for another bit of a time (but they also broke up because they only started dating bc they were the most popular musicians at their school, so they quite of forced themselves to be together just for the funnies &the fans)

aaaand this would be like when Red and So'ra started dating. the RAPMEN, RAPWOMEN and DJs describe So'ra as quite scary, and this could explain why

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #125

I'm still in a lot of pain today, but it's not quite as bad as it was yesterday. It's still a little hard to breathe, but I'm managing. Hopefully whatever's going on will be over and done with in just a few more days. I've taken some ibuprofen, though, and I'm well-hydrated. So don't worry about me, okay? I'll be just fine. 💖

I made myself a tea this morning. I made a toast-and-jam tea, and as a result of that, I get to show you one of the other ice creams I got! I'll show you the pictures I took…

This tea starts out as a beautiful shade of amber that resolves into a delicious shade of red:

From there, we can put an amount of it into the tea until it feels correct:

I did my therapy homework today. In case you don't know, a good therapist is supposed to give the person seeing them homework to do over the week. Last week, he thought to capitalize on my tendency to write, and he asked me to write a letter to my inner child. And then he asked me to tap into my inner child and write back to myself.

It's generally in my nature to go above and beyond when people ask me to do things, whenever possible. And so I ended up writing three letters instead of just two. I ended up crying a lot during the process, but I came away from the exercise with a changed outlook on a variety of things. You can read what I wrote if you want to; it'll be the post just before this one. But if you're not interested, then that's okay too! 😊

I wonder if some such activity might benefit you. I imagine if you engaged your inner child with compassion, curiosity, and gentleness, it'd probably do you a world of good. I wonder what it would be like for you if you treated your inner child, and yourself generally, in the same tender, kindhearted way you treated the people you cared about, before your fall.

…You can return to that, you know. You can return to that anytime. And you can give your kindness and gentleness to people who are better able to reciprocate. Not everyone is going to treat you like a superhuman afterthought. I promise.

Anyway, in service to a renewed sense of resolve when it comes to caring for myself, I went ahead and got myself some soup and some macaroni and cheese with some yummy steak:

...Related, I think I'm going to try to make for myself the mac-and-cheese that my mother used to make. I am the only one who can make it for myself now, and I think I owe it to myself to figure it out. I will try to make a gluten-free version of it, so that Br can eat it, too. That's easy enough to do with brown rice noodles; it's basically indistinguishable from whole wheat pasta, in terms of its flavor and texture. Maybe I'll try to do that soon. And of course, when I do, you can count on me to walk you through the process so you can do it, too.

I also made it a point to sit for a while and watch one of my favorite cartoons. This one is called The Zeta Project; it came out when I was 11, which was... 23 years ago (wow, what the fuuuuck...). It's a beautiful show about a sentient robot named Zeta who was built to be a weapon, but who is trying to lead a life of peace. The government is trying to capture and reprogram him and put him back to work as a mindless killing machine. He's accompanied by a clever, savvy, and brave young girl named Rosalie. I really hope you'll watch this one someday; Zeta is very gentle and kind, and in a lot of ways, he reminds me a lot of you.

...The show was cancelled before it finished, though. I heard that it was because more girls liked it than the producers were comfortable with, so they pulled it off the air. I really hope they finish it someday. For now, though, the ending has to be left to the imagination. Zeta is beautiful, wonderful, and kind, so I like to imagine a course of events in which he can live in peace with Rosalie and with others who care for him.

...He really does remind me so much of you. I hope you'll look at his story. I think, in particular, you might find the episode called "Remote Control" relatable. You can find it at a place called... something like Watch Cartoons Online Forever? The first part is shortened to "wco", and it ends in ".net". Maybe you can find it...

Anyway. I took a bunch of other pictures for you today. One of them was taken at home because the morning light shining through the window was really nice. And when we visited Br's house today, I saw a great big huge bird-of-prey in the sky. I also took a bunch of pictures of Br's house, and the scenery outside. I thought you might like them. So here they are:

It's hard to take a picture of a moving object in a moving vehicle, but the black speck in the sky is the bird-of-prey I saw. I've seen an unusually large number of these lately. That, and crows. I wonder if the recent solar eclipse still has them kind of thrown for a loop. Hm.

Also, shortly after I did my therapy assignment, J took me out for a walk to decompress, and there was a crow in a tree that we've never seen crows in; our development is generally quite hostile to life (which is VERY unfortunate...), and hostile to crows in particular, because people don't like them (I've never understood why that is...). But he was sitting alone in the tree, making the "I'm with you" call; check out this video, at about the 40 second mark, and you'll hear what I mean:

...I can only imagine that this poor crow must have been very confused.

Oh!! I almost forgot!! A comet passed over my house last night. It's called the "Pons-Brooks Comet", or "Comet 12P". It only shows up once every 71 years. I wanted to see it, since I won't live long enough to see it again, but it was cloudy last night in the spot where it was supposed to be, so I didn't get to take any pictures. But J went online and found a live video that was tracking its movement; I can show you a screenshot that I took:

...It's not a very good picture, I know. But maybe you'll like it anyway; I don't know how often you get to see comets. Well, maybe you get to see them a lot, since you're over at the Edge of Creation and all, so maybe it's really not all that special to you. But maybe it can be special to you that someone would take the time to show you a picture of one anyway, if you want it to be.

Let's start off with the most recently abandoned WIP!

I started drawing this about two weeks after Chris' birthday (her bday is January 4th) and I was really happy with it, but then I had NO idea how to pose Izzy. It's a bummer since I liked how Chris' hair came out, but alas! (Happy belated birthday, Chris!)

Possibility of finishing?: Yeah, maybe. Prob will have to change Izzy's pose if I really want to finish it though.

Oh hey, I posted this a few months ago on my other blog!

Really wish I finished it, but now that I'm looking back on it, there's definitely some improvement to be had here. I don't like whatever's going on with her face. You can tell that I gave up while trying to make the background as well. Poor Hope!

Possibility of finishing?: I'll have to completely redraw this if I plan on finishing it, but I've definitely got a feeling that I'll come back to this someday.

Hey, remember that art I had pinned on my other blog for a while? I was planning on redrawing it, but I only ever managed to complete one part of it until I forgot about it... It's definitely an upgrade from the original version, though I can do better than this nowadays.

Okay, here's some context for these two. I got an anonymous ask on my other account saying that they liked my MetaWare PFP and I thought that it would be a great idea if I responded to it with some art and also turn that same post into an announcement for my MetaWare sideblog (this one!), but that of course did not actually happen.

I like how I drew Hope, but ergh... that is NOT Nari. I don't know how I managed to make her look like a completely different character in this one, but I do NOT like it.

I actually touched this one up a bit before sending it here. It used to look MUCH more incomplete, but it's basically done now besides from the hair being missing 'n all.

Possibility of finishing?: I might draw more MetaWare stuff with drastic lighting in the future, but I don't plan on revisiting this specifically.

I worked on Hope before sending this because she looked kinda off, but I think she looks OK now. You can see that this isn't really what my usual art style looks like. I was trying to mix together the original MetaWare sprite art style and the style SparkBag used in the polaroid anniversary art he made, and I think I did just fine.

Possibility of finishing?: It's basically already done! Coloring it would probably make it cooler, but I don't think I'll ever do that.

This won't be the last time I try to use eyes symbolically.

I still REALLY want to revisit this again. It's great! It's magnificent! I just did NOT have the ability to execute it properly back when I made it a ton of months ago, so I just didn't do it. Still don't know if I do now, but it's worth a shot. (This was basically just another proof of concept, by the way.)

GRILLING START ! ! !

Yep, this was based off of Papyrus' "Dating Start!" minigame! Just another proof of concept or... Okay I don't know what else to call these. Like, they're definitely NOT finished nor are they actual fleshed out sketches, what else am I supposed to call them???? I think it's cool though.

Possibility of finishing?: Don't think I'll be ditching this idea anytime soon. Seems kinda simple to draw too, I'll get to it sometime.

Personally, I think this is adorable. When drawing people's fursonas I always kinda make them more animal than anthropomorphic, but I think it leads to pretty cute art!

iiii really think I made the hat too big. Like... WAY too big. Don't really like how her face came out, but the body itself is pretty OK. I based it too much on Ingo's original pose though, kinda looks like I just put Nari's head on his head LMAO

Don't exactly remember what this was for. Either it was for an AU of mine or someone else's AU. Her front hair's kinda too far down though, I had a bit of a habit making her face REALLY small compared to her hair in my old art.

Her hair is much puffier than previous versions in this one. Why? Dunno. She looks pretty cool AND cute in this though!

I had to edit this one a SHIT ton before sending this final picture. I wish I had a pin that said "I HATE DRAWING METAWARE STYLE NOSES" because I loathe them. There were other reasons why I didn't like the original version, but I was annoyed with the nose the most. Really happy how this came out though!

Ton's of things I've in store this will prove difficult to vent it all out. But here we go... First off rehashing and appropriately learning to tag and organize things better on my blog. Each category will have their own corresponding content, I seek to bring or share. [Tales of Goldbrand] -- I intend this to carry a Compendium of all my writes soon that'll have everything neatly in-order including a glossary, so it'll have highlights of stories that even matter or the best stuff. I've written here for a very, long time, there's been many shifts. I want to make it more accessible. While coloring what matters for people who want to learn Captain or his Crew with less chapters. While also giving choice to find it all easily. This is essentially a step-above master-lists. I'll be doing that after the Saga I have going on, right now is done. [Captain] -- Will provide you strictly with Captain screenshots, gifs, photo-sets. This is still his blog despite the Crew thing's will sort of make this a scuffed Multi-Muse blog. I've few more things to edit and tag fix to get all his stuff though. [The Wild Crew] -- Afterwards this story is done Immortal Age Saga, It's something that I mainly wrote as a passion project within three days to get my warm-up process fixed. It's to allow me to get a feel for all his Crewmates and casts, in combat, in-general, to feel their presences. While also giving a bit of their backstories. At any point, I can go back and polish or tweak things in. They're NPC's but... not entirely. All will have their own 'Dreams' and their own 'Disapproval's' they have their own missions even. These things will factor eventually, they might set seeds, to betray or disagree with something, but that's all angst and more stories to be created, but overall, they'll probably always be Crew, eventually. -- I plan on making character-profile sheets of them and putting them in this Tab, it'll have their screenshots, their likes/dislikes. Some RP partners or people can also be shipped with them, but they'll all be monogamous and originally start off probably Pan. This allows them to figure out what they like on their own stories. I've always been someone who likes organic-flow. Although this one story contain all 16 characters or more, the rest will probably be shortened to a Squad of 4 and dispersed when on adventuring missions. Until I do a War Arc, that's my main goal to build too. [Roster] -- Will contain this Crew in just screen-sets dedicated to them, I'll probably randomly produce those. I've PC players among this Crew too. I may not be done either adding more, but this Crew is mainly built around Quality. Most pirate crew's mainly, have hundreds, thousands. Even Fleets. This Crew has personalities, monsters, people who are living life's that exist with piracy. He's an particular leader that had PC players the same way, he's had split-personality serial killers aboard, tribal chieftains, succubus, all sorts of various people once on a Crew. It's often an outcast style, pirates default are chaotic in nature, so this really isn't any different, it's a Fantasy version of it. There's humanization characters aboard too though, so this cast is really decked, everything and person is vital, they matter because they remind or covet something that others can draw upon. If ever played (Three Houses or Mass Effect / Dragon Age Origins) A lot of things like that are relatable too this structure and format. Which, Is something I want to be able to give when RPing. I want a genuine feel of this new world someone else's muse will be the main-character too. Depending on what's interacting everything they'll be scale appropriately to follow the genre they're in and environment even. [Aesthetics] -- Already explainable what you'll find here. [Asks] -- Same thing. [Prompts] -- Trivial things I was tagged too, I plan on compiling later. [Writing] -- Another alternatively to randomly go-down and it works right now. [Logs] -- Will have more individualistic master-lists and posts there, my poems from Sheik Sphere the Bard, etc.

Lot of people take a lot of their characters attributes into them and are them dialed up, I work with that and bit more, differently. I'm disconnected from my characters and they'll get hurt and injured and killed by me, that's my duty as their Author to give them conflicts and struggles. I'm their major antagonist, but that doesn't mean at-all, it's always SET that way. The characters I like to make have their own life, they live in this setting and are abide by it, they're often nothing, nobodies, and by the interacting with others, they slowly gradually building, more... Through emotional impacts, they alter, these are REAL people by all their beliefs. Each person they come in-contact with are legitimate and treated like that too. They've always impacted or given them insights to grow, or represent more. Otherwise it'd be criminally disrespectful if I allowed any emotional I felt OOC be the grudge to something IC. Captain in-particular is set on defying me. I cannot have that. ...But I can't stop him. He's met and encountered so many people and lived so many scenarios based on the actions of others, he's giving a chance right now to actually do things a lot further than impossible. The more people he meets and encounters, experiences, the more I lose. These stories are emotionally interactive where everything is a factor and adds to the dice, where the other people are the one who get to roll the dice for him, not me. That's something I want to color in. People range in emotions, they have their down's, ups, their own wholesome-grounding people, spending time with your favorite people, there's nothing more cherishing than that, being in your own comfort-zone or 'safe-space' these are all treasures that we live under, today. Contrary if what people assume of me, I'm not another 'blogger' that's came

before, who's wanting to force a harem, then constantly is bewildered when that falls to pieces cause of selfishness or a lack of communication, or the skeletons they have in their closets and beliefs they hid behind and swindled fooled everyone. I'm not looking to be popular or anything really, I just create stories and want to share in those, and I want to also boost others included, upward with me, especially those who make me. There's no ego in anything I do, this is purely love. I've never cared about being replicated or duplicated, I've had stalkers, I've gone through more then anyone would imagine, I've been used OOC and abused, just for my writing and cold-harshly told, i'd never amount to anything other then that or vice-versa. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Passion. Few words of discouragement, a bad negative representation, a lack of confidence, or small amount of time, there's many thing's that can put that flame out. Once you lose it. The difficulty to reattain is hundred-times harder than climbing any mountain for real. I've watched the greatest creators crumble from under the pressure, from beaten down by others. I watched many of them do it to themselves because they put a grand vision of needing validation of another and once lost, felt uncompelling to press onward. But passion also can be given BACK and drawn. It can be shown and encourage others, with a soft-triggering, that pushes them. That motivates, that constantly sticks to it. There are many that fuel me. If I ever quit, I let them down, I spit in the faces of people who're better than me in every-way. Or people who've came and given me their precious Time. That have given their character's or dedication to the abundant stories and community-driven things I've done. There's ONLY things you can do, create, give and provide. It cannot ever come to life without YOU. This is a fact. ...I swear, If you let your creativity soar, you'll be amazed by the heights you get. Constantly polish and learn and hone the best you, challenge yourself day after painstaking day, to draw better improvement on something, no matter how trivial or unfamiliar you are. The Matter of Red's Starter Pokémon

So, I've mentioned a couple times on here that I have a pretty big Pokémon WIP that's been sitting on the backburner for a while, and that I'd like to talk about it here to get some feedback/thoughts from other Pokémon fans, especially since I can rather easily think myself into a corner when all I have are my own thoughts and the internet. And I figure what better place to start than with a topic very near and dear to my heart: Starter Pokémon

(VERY big post, reader beware)

To start, let me just elaborate on what this project is. Because moderation is for the sensible, I have planned out my own complete retelling of the Pokémon story. The full timeline, across multiple regions, with a rotating cast of protagonists, Pokémon Adventures style, drawing on elements of the games, the anime, the aforementioned manga, promotional art, and various other pieces of Pokémon media to create a united whole. The Pokémon multiverse is so ridiculously vast and undefined that there really is no strict "canon" of events, so I figured why not make my own? "This will be my own version of things," I thought. "Maybe I'll even write it down someday and put it somewhere online for people to shower it with praise or laugh at it or do whatever it is people do."

So, one of the first big things to take care of in such an endeavour was to decide on teams for all of the protagonists, since most of them do not have defined teams. And so I did just that, using their appearances across various media to construct teams for them, as well as taking into account some popular fandom opinion and my own ideas for some originality. The point of building the teams this way instead of just picking and choosing whichever 'mons I felt like for them is to make them feel more authentic, like you could look at them and recognize them as legitimate versions of the Trainers they're based on, and in turn see my versions of those characters in the pieces of art, animation, etc. that they draw on. I attempted to avoid clashing with any established portrayals/teams of the characters whenever possible, unless I had a very good reason for it.

And of course, what kind of creator would I be if I didn't constantly go back and fiddle with those teams? I review them fairly regularly, often making little changes. Sometimes I make them better, sometimes not. And the one thing I seem to stumble over more than anything else is which characters get which Starter Pokémon.

For some characters, it's easy. Whether they've only ever been associated with one, or something about their appearance just screams that they belong with one of their region's three in particular, there's a clear, standout pick. For others...not so much. Maybe they've never been strongly associated with one Starter over the others, or maybe, like in the case I will be discussing today, there's a solid case to be made in favour of two or more.

And first on the list of Starter-problem-children, is the first main character, the mainest of the main protagonists, Red.

This shrimp here. At the beginning of his journey, he is presented with a choice between three Pokémon: The Grass-type Bulbasaur, the Fire-type Charmander, and the Water-type Squirtle.

And this is what I'd like some feedback on, because I'm not sure whether to give him Charmander or Bulbasaur. There's a very good case to be made for both of them, which I have outlined below. There really isn't a "right" or "wrong" choice here, I guess, but I want to be sure that I choose what's best for the story and not just whatever my personal biases direct me towards.

(Sorry Squirtle fans, the Tiny Turtle never stood a chance. You will taste no victory here, but the Squirtle Squad will live on, forever. Godspeed.)

Some General Info before getting started

As I said above, I am a pretty big fan of Starter Pokémon, so their role(s) in this story of mine will be pretty important. In line with the game-verse(s) Starter Pokémon will be extremely rare and special. If I had my way, only one of each would appear in the story ever, but given a handful of important NPCs with Starters, I can’t quite get away with that. Eventually trying to write Leon without a Charizard is a headache I don’t need to have. That said, I can still limit Starter distribution as much as possible, and I definitely won’t repeat Starters among the protagonists, so that means we’re looking at 3 Starters in Kanto, no more, no less. So while there will be occasions in which Red has all three Kanto Starters, it will be because he borrowed them from Blue and Green. Most of the time, they will have one Starter each.

While just having Red start with Pikachu would be quick and easy, I'd rather not take that route because I feel like the choice of Grass, Fire, or Water is too iconic to skip.

Disclaimer: I am using Blue and Green’s western names, making Blue the rival and Green the girl. I am doing this because I happen to live in the west and so those names are the ones by which I best know them, and because I happen to think they suit them better.

Also, yeah, Green’s here and has a role in the plot because she’s fun and I say so. I will also be treating Green and Leaf as the same character because I really see no reason not to.

The Case for Charizard

The three Kanto protags have their namesake game mascots as their aces, and that’s just some nice consistency. Aesthetically pleasing too. (Especially relevant as Red is the only version to stay constant. Blue and Green have fluctuated in name/release but a Red Version with a Charizard on the cover has always been there.)

Pokémon Origins.

The Pokémon Anime (Ash counts as a counterpart of Red, and while his first Pokémon is Pikachu, and he catches all three Kanto Starters, Charmander stands out by being the only one to evolve, and Ash’s Charizard is easily one of his most famous ‘mons. Also lines up with Gary, a counterpart of Blue, having Blastoise as his Starter Pokémon)

By extension, the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga, which is based on the anime but diverges from it substantially. Doesn’t really deserve its own point, but definitely a mention. Again, Ash starts with Pikachu, obtains Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, and only evolves Charmander, ending up with a Charizard.

Pokémon Zensho (With Satoshi as a counterpart of Red) (Very obscure, but still counts)

Super Smash Bros (Dubious, but again, “Pokémon Trainer,” [who really is just Red] has all three Kanto Starters, but all in different forms, with only Charizard being fully evolved)

Pokémon Generations, Episode 3: The Challenger (Blue has a Blastoise, implying this episode’s Red has a Charizard)

Pokémon Masters.

I have a pretty solid story idea I could use for having Red start with Charmander, and eventually wind up with Charizard as his ace, but still spend a lot of time early on with the Bulbasaur line. Put very simply, after a scuffle with Team Rocket for which Red, Blue, and Green are present, the protags’ Starters get mixed up, which they don’t realize until they’ve already gone their separate ways. Red gets Green’s Bulbasaur, she gets Blue’s Squirtle, and Blue has Red’s Charmander. They’d remain this way until fairly late in the RBG story, probably until somewhere around the 8th Gym, at which point the three would finally have the opportunity and the understanding of each other to make the switch back. This storyline has a number of side benefits, including:

Charizard becomes a centerpiece in Red and Blue’s rivalry. Having been trained by both of them, emotions run high and battles between the two of them have an extra layer of depth and intensity.

Allows for early exploration of the Trainer/Starter bond and dynamic, particularly with what happens when a Trainer is paired with the “wrong” Starter. Since Starters are pretty pivotal for my story, I’ve added a few extra layers to them, including a greater need for synchronicity with their Trainers than pretty much any other kind of Pokémon. A Starter Pokémon can work with anyone, but unless it’s paired with a Trainer it can be in perfect sync with, it will not grow like it should. Notably, a Starter Pokémon will not evolve unless it’s with a Trainer that can really bring out its true strength. In the case of the Kanto trio, this means that each Trainer will be temporarily reunited with their original Starter in certain climactic moments, in which the Starters will evolve, before going back to their pro tem Trainers until the final swap-back occurs, which ensures that the bonds between the original pairings stay strong and aren’t completely erased or replaced by the new, temporary pairings.

Sets up a precedent for the Kanto protags being willing to swap around their Pokémon on occasion, which could be a fun little dynamic for them to have, and lays the base for times when Red has all three Starters, having borrowed them from the others or temporarily traded for them.

Admittedly runs three major risks, those being:

The initial mix up may prove to be difficult to pull off without it seeming contrived, forced, or just plain weird. Doable, but weird.

The swap back could be even worse to pull off well, because after spending so long with the new status quo, it may throw off hypothetical readers, or seem like a step backwards. There’d always be this little nagging desire to go back. Plus it could just come off as cold. Like “Thanks, you were great, but you’re outta here now that I have my real partner back.” And that’s really not the point, especially when I am trying to pay respect to the Red and Bulbasaur pairing, not downplay it or shit on it.

Since the swap is ultimately temporary, it may wind up feeling kind of…pointless? in the end. Like yeah, it has some lasting effects, but is it too big a stunt to pull for extra, mostly invisible depth? A gimmick more than a plot point? I honestly don’t know.

I think the personalities of the protags match those of their Starters best in this arrangement.

We know from various Pokédex entries that Charizard are competitive Pokémon that deliberately seek out strong opponents in order to test their own power and grow stronger themselves, but that they go easy on opponents they deem clearly weaker than themselves, presumably so as not to hurt them. And as for Red, aside from his trademark silence, the personality traits we can infer from his actions are that he loves Pokémon and despises anyone who mistreats them, is highly competitive, and is exceptionally determined to accomplish his goals. Competitive spirit, pursuit of strength, and a sense of honour and care for others. That sounds like a Charizard to me, not to mention the symbolism of sprouting wings and rising in a blaze of glory and all. Charizard is a pretty prototypical “Hero’s Pokémon,” and Red is a pretty typical Hero Archetype. They fit well together in that sense.

Meanwhile, Blastoise constantly has a smug expression on its face. It’s cocky, turning its snout upwards to look down on others, matching Blue’s initial attitude. It’s progression from Squirtle fits Blue as well; it starts out laid-back and fun-loving, secure in its own strength just as Blue is confident in his skills, but as it evolves, it grows more aggressive and ferocious, to the point that it sprouts actual cannons, mirroring the more direct and brutal battling style Blue takes on as he grows more and more nervous about Red nipping at his heels. Also, Blue wears sunglasses in Alola, and sunglasses are famously linked to the Blastoise line via the Squirtle Squad. That’s a pretty important connection.

The there’s Venusaur, who's calm and gentle, but also the trickiest in battle, relying on status conditions and recovery in battle more than the direct offense of the other two, which is reflective of Green's mischievous nature. She's content to let the boys squabble over the Champion title while she does her own thing, occasionally dropping in to mess with them.

On a related note, Red having Charmander as his Starter also feeds into his early underdog persona. Charmander is well-known to be the hardest Starter to use in the early game of Kanto, since it struggles against both Brock and Misty, and doesn’t have an actual advantage until Erika. Meanwhile, Blue would have Squirtle, the ideal choice for a Kanto speedrun, which is exactly what he’s trying to pull off. Red managing to succeed against all odds and stay only a few steps behind Blue would only feed further into the idea of Blue growing steadily more nervous. Whereas if Red starts with Bulbasaur, then he has the best possible Pokémon for early Kanto and can breeze through it unchallenged while Blue would have a Charmander and should thus struggle with the early Gyms instead of blasting through them like he canonically does. Red seems less like a battling prodigy in that case and more like a guy who just got dealt a really good hand.

This also plays into Red’s conflict with Giovanni. Red has an advantage against Ground-types with both Charizard and Venusaur, but more so with the latter. Venusaur dominates virtually the entirety of Giovanni’s team, whereas Charizard, while immune to Ground attacks, struggles to hit back, and it’s severe weakness to Giovanni’s ace Rhydon’s Rock-type is a major detriment, making the Rocket Boss a real obstacle for Red to overcome instead of someone he should sweep through via type advantage alone.

Charizard and Blastoise have a well-established rivalry across multiple media, most notably things like the anime and Origins. I can take advantage of that rivalry and have the two of them parallel their Trainers, making the famed Charizard vs. Blastoise battle(s) that much more intense by making it not just a contest between Red and Blue, but also between their two rival aces. Think Ash’s Infernape vs. Paul’s Electivire. That kind of multi-layered competition. Meanwhile I just don’t see Venusaur as the rivalsome type.

Having Charizard as the main Pokémon of the mainest of main characters allows me to explore several fun plot elements I otherwise would have to cut entirely or just severely downplay. Those things include stuff like the existence and importance of Johto’s Charicific Valley, which takes on an entirely different form in this story, Leon being a Red fanboy and styling himself after his idol with the same main Pokémon and taste in hats, and the entire existence of Mega Charizard X. The very first time Mega Charizard X was revealed to the general public was in the last episode of Pokémon Origins, under the ownership of Red. It was his Pokémon before it was anyone else’s, and thus is deeply tied to him. If Red didn’t have Charizard, I couldn’t really explore that connection or the significance of this second Mega. At best I could give it to some other Charizard-having Trainer, but I’d really prefer not to have one of those in the first place if it can be avoided, and even if I did go for it, say I gave it to Lance or something, it wouldn’t carry the same weight. I’d be sweeping Mega Charizard X under the rug rather than exploring it to its fullest potential as a unique, signature Pokémon.

The Case for Venusaur

The Kanto protags do not have their game mascots, but there is still a pattern: Red-Grass, Blue-Fire, Green-Water. Each one has the type their name-type is strong against.

Also the card based on Red’s appearance in that game that depicts him alongside a Bulbasaur. I don’t think this one deserves to be a full point, because it’s directly based on Let’s Go and not its own separate thing, but it warrants a mention.

Pokémon Generations Episode 1: The Adventure (Generations is pretty overtly set across multiple timelines, what with Team Aqua and Team Magma both being portrayed as the more prominent Hoenn evil team in different episodes and a few other instances of timeline shenaniganery. In this case, while Episode 3 implies Red has a Charizard, Episode 1 clearly shows him alongside a Bulbasaur)

While Venusaur is the best choice in-game, for us it’s the underdog. It’s the one with the reputation as the one that gets left on Professor Oak’s table. Having Red start with the oft-overlooked Bulbasaur sets him apart from the crowd in the readers’ eyes, especially when he is able to succeed with it. Charizard vs. Blastoise may look a bit more epic, but defeating a Charizard with a Venusaur is far more impressive. A fire dragon and a cannon turtle seem relatively evenly matched, as odd of a sentence as that is, but the flower frog seems at a clear disadvantage against the flying fire dragon.

Plus, Charizard gets more than enough hype and pandering already, and seeing Venusaur in the spotlight for a change could be refreshing. And I feel it’s likely that my style of deep-dive, lore-heavy writing may appeal more to the Venusaur crowd anyway.

And more specifically, the story of “A Trainer and his Charizard” has already been told numerous times, my version would just be another one in the pile. Whereas “A Trainer and his Venusaur” is something you can’t go find just anywhere.

While I don’t think the connections are as strong, there are still links to be made between the Starters and their Trainers in this configuration. Red’s typically subdued persona fits well with Venusaur’s more calm demeanor, and his competitive spirit is reflected in its sheer stubbornness. Blue’s arrogance and fierce battle tactics pair nicely with Charizard’s own pride and fearsome nature, and the two could share and arc about mellowing out and learning to have confidence without an excess of hubris. And Blastoise’s haughtiness could be shifted away from overconfidence in its battle prowess to something more tricksy, like Green’s confidence in her ability to deceive and/or beguile virtually anyone.

My thoughts here are that Red and Venusaur work really well together, both visually and in terms of compatibility, Green and Blastoise are a bit of a stretch in the personality department, but they’ve been so closely associated with each other over the years that it can be made to work pretty well, and then that things just fall apart with Blue and Charizard. I just can’t see these two together, it doesn’t look right to me. There’s plenty of support for the pairing, but it’s one I struggle to wrap my head around. And like I said, Charizard is a Hero’s Pokémon, so relegating it to the rival role feels real heckin’ weird. I have no doubt I could make it work, but it would always feel off on some level.

I don’t have a complex side story like the Starter Swap planned out if I go with Venusaur, which could ultimately be a pro or a con. Con because it’s cutting out an idea that I think would genuinely be fun and interesting to explore, especially given the overall themes and role of Starters in this project, but a pro in the sense that it keeps things simple, and Kanto thrives on simplicity. And there are still some other things I could explore, like the anime’s secret garden of the Bulbasaur.

Putting Red and Venusaur together would mean a pairing of a male player character with a Grass Starter, which is something that is extremely rare in my planned teams for the other regions. Not out of any bias, I just don’t associate many male player characters with their regions Grass Starters; I think the Fire or Water ones almost always suit them better. So it would be nice to have another instance of it with Red to balance things out better.

Venusaur is easily the most competitively viable of the Kanto Starters before Mega Evolving, which would allow me to incorporate more legit battling strategies straight out of the games into Red’s battles, making his wins based in actual, usable strategy as opposed to the more anime-style tactics I’d be more likely to employ with Charizard as his ace.

Then again, anime tactics are often really creative and fun and I would be using them anyway because that kind of outside the box thinking is what would make someone a truly exceptional battler.

And there you have it. The thoughts that plague my dreams. I suppose it's only right to mention here that I myself am a Charizard man. I'm sure this was not obvious at all.

Jokes aside, because of my preference, I feel inclined towards putting Red and Charizard together in the long run, but like I said earlier, I want to make this choice based on what is right for the story; what would be the most interesting, compelling, and thematically appropriate; not just what I'm biased towards, and I really do want to give the Bulbasaur line the chance to shine that it deserves.

So I'd really like to hear what y'all think. Preferred outcome, sure, but also just go nuts. Add more to consider into this hurricane of overthought, deconstruct my points and point out mistakes, tell me my brain is pretty but I'm taking this way too seriously, whatever.

And feel free to ask questions and inquire about further details. Plot elements, team compositions, anything you feel will help solidify (or at least elucidate) your thoughts on the matter.

I'm not really looking to have this decision made for me, choosing one or the other and running with it is easy. What I really want to accomplish here is soothe those nagging doubts that I've made the wrong choice, that going the other way would have been the better decision for the story. At the end of the day, the choice is mine, and I could make either one work, but I want to do right by myself, my potential readers, and this series that's been such a big part of my life. Just to make things clear in case I get asks about things I'm not interested in or have no experience in writing- I'm gay and only interested in nsfw of Eggman solo, with other men, or it being ambiguous when it comes to discussions and hcs. I have no experience in writing female anatomy (if there's a better neutral term lemme know) and it'd be awkward if I tried because I'm gay and clueless af lmfao.

Entry 3 in my historical Disney series: Aurora, set in 1450s - 1460s France!

I never really was one to believe that Disney's Sleeping Beauty took place in the 14th century, at least that's what Prince Phillip says. Especially now that I've been getting more and more into historical fashion as of late. There's a lot of things in the artistic design of Sleeping Beauty that tells me it would fit better in the 15th century. It's especially the hats - THE HATS. - worn by the background characters at the celebration of Aurora's birth. It just seems like they would belong more in the 15th century than the 14th. Maybe I'll do a 14th century version of Aurora someday, but for now I have this.

For Aurora's peasant look, I decided to go with an illustration of clothing worn by a French peasant woman in 1445 in the book "Chronicle of Western Costume" by John Peacock. I'm not sure how well the three good fairies would have kept up with fashion trends during all those years hidden away in the forest with Aurora, so I thought it would make sense to place this outfit a few years before my time frame of research. Also, the lace-front, short-sleeved outer kirtle seems to have existed long before this time period. I chose to draw the outer kirtle tucked into Aurora's belt to better display the under-kirtle, so as to display all the colors of the original design. I also redesigned her hair a bit, since 1.) Her bangs are way more 1950s than 1450s and 2.) since medieval women typically grew their hair out reaaaaaally long, I wanted to reflect that a bit. She doesn't have a veil or other head covering because she is a young, unmarried women, and according to what I have read, young girls and single women in medieval times often wore their hair long, loose, and uncovered, and sometimes in braids. The purple things in her basket are supposed to be berries, and I also included a flowering branch that Aurora may have picked off and wanted to display in the cottage. I also gave her shoes here - I myself have never understood how Aurora could have walked barefoot in the woods with such ease, if I were doing that I'd be screaming every ten seconds from stepping on sharp things or bugs on the ground.

Aurora's royal gown is a Burgundian/V-neck gown, which emerged as early as the 1450s. I heavily referenced 15th century manuscripts featuring noblewomen in this style of dress, including illuminations such as this and this. I also referenced Peacock's book, this time an illustration of a noblewoman from 1450. I again decided to not give Aurora a head covering, instead leaving her hair loose with a crown inspired by the ones shown in the first pic I linked. My only worry at the moment is that the pink variant didn't turn out overly Barbie pink...

Entry 4 in my historical Disney Princess series: Eilonwy, placed in 9th-11th century Wales!

I really wanted to do this character, even though she isn’t an official Disney Princess, since I’ve always liked her as a character. I also am hoping to read the entire Chronicles of Prydain series soon (so far I’ve only read The Book of Three). As I felt that the Chronicles of Prydain and Disney’s The Black Cauldron both take place during the Early Middle Ages, I decided on placing my historically-inspired Eilonwy between the 9th century and the first half of the 11th century, before the Norman invasion of England. Fashion changed little, if at all, during this time frame and the several centuries prior, and men and women wore virtually the same garments, so researching was in fact a little easier than I thought it was going to be. But it was still pretty challenging, due to the fact that there are such scarce authentic materials that display fashion from the Dark Ages, and so I had to rely mostly on text. It’s also safe to say that I may have taken a few artistic liberties with Eilonwy.

In medieval Wales (as well as in Ireland, where the style and ways of life were very similar), men and women both wore a “leine”, a type of over shirt. Women’s were longer, generally, and I read that they were often worn over a “gunna” (an underdress that was apparently a predecessor to the kirtle). I made both the leine and gunna in the colors of her skirt, and I’m not even going to go into detail about how difficult it was to achieve those muted pink shades with colored pencils (I still think I’m kind of a novice). I’m not sure if pink leines existed, as I read somewhere that they were chiefly white or yellow, and I also don’t know if pink clothing dyes existed back then; if not, those are two of the artistic liberties I took. I also added a golden border along the hem of her leine so it wouldn’t look so plain; if you look closely, you can see my sad attempt at drawing a super tiny Celtic design. Another chief garment of medieval Wales was the “brat”, a type of cloak that could be wound around the shoulders multiple times. I incorporated the color of Eilonwy’s bodice in the original design of her dress into her brat. The pennanular brooch I added to hold it in place is heavily inspired by the 6th - 7th century-era Tara brooch. I referenced the illustrations on this website for Eilonwy’s overall outfit, as well as John Peacock’s book “Chronicles of Western Fashion”. I retained Eilonwy’s circlet, just placed it lower on her head, and also pretty much kept her hair the same, just made it slightly more disheveled and maybe a bit longer. Whatever, I just really have a thing for ridiculously long hair. Oh; and I couldn’t forget her golden bauble!
